It’s Time to Do a Personal Info Security Review
Personal information security is about more than using a password manager
I returned to the UK last year and nearly lost access to several bank accounts. There were various problems, but the root cause centred around proving my identity.
It’s not hard to understand why it happened. Even today, sometimes there is no substitute to paper documents. We had a house to pack up and ship overseas. Some boxes were sent ahead of us and put in storage. Only a relatively small number could travel with us. It was critical to track what went where, and mistakes were made.
It reminded me that personal information security is about more than just choosing strong passwords and keeping them safe. Nor is it simply about online safety.
It’s about:
- Knowing hat you’ve got and where it is
- Having access to it in a timely fashion
- Making sure only the right people have access to it.
- Having certainty that the information is right
- Understanding the impact if something goes wrong.
